Can I turn of IM on Facebook?

Is there anyway to hide when I'm online so people don't send me instant messages? I like to upload pictures to Facebook, but usually after I hit upload I walk away from the computer to do something else. Then I don't notice if I get an IM. I really only want to message with relatives if that's possible. Is it possible to turn it off completely? Or is there a way to select a handful of people I'd actually want to IM with?

yes! click on the chatbox and click "options" then click "go offline" and NOBODY can tell you're online!

EDIT: but if you "go offline" you cant chat with anyone. You are either visible to everyone or visible to No-one

Click on the bar than hit options than go offline
