Can anyone tell me how long emails are kept on ISP servers?
My younger sister is going thru a nasty divorce and her soon to be ex is threatening to subpoena her emails, texts, facebook and myspace accounts. We have researched this subject but can't find a definitive answer. How long are these records kept and what do you think the cost of these subpoenas would be?

Forever. Service providers keep emails forever and they are available via subpoena. You can delete all you want but the server still has those emails and accounts.

You would have to contact the Internet Provider. Are you aware there is software that can be used to track the activities of a particular computer? If she had the computer while her ex lived with her then it is quite possible he knows her IP number (all computers hooked into the internet have them) and it is very possible for him to know what she does online all of the time, you can print out transcripts of emails, chats, and message board posts, all of which are admissible in court. How much it costs to get information from specific internet provider would depend upon that internet provider.
