Why did I get a notification with a star saying that someone uploaded a picture on facebook?

I don't understand why I am getting these. The first two times I got this, they were my friends on facebook. Now, I just got a star notification that someone uploaded a picture on facebook and it's someone I don't know at all and they're not in my friend list either. It's a notification about instagram pics.

Do THEY know that this is coming to me?

That star means you are close friends. So anything they upload or post you get a notification. You can remove them as close friends I forgot how

It means that they are on your favorite list, and they do not know.

Go to their profile and around where you go to delete them off your friends list or subscriptions it should say "friends, acquaintances, close friends". Just change it to acquaintances. You can also unsubscribe from them to where it does not show any of their status updates, but I'd just delete.
