Unauthorised access to email and facebook accounts?

My friend has had his Hotmail and facebook accounts hacked into by his ex girlfriend, she even changed the passwords so he could not get into ether account. She has got hold of lots of personal information and is now using it to make his life very difficult.

Is this a crime?

If so who should this be reported to?
He is 32 and has a 3 year old with his Ex. She didnt know his password but new all the answers to his securtiy questions, thats how she got in.

Yes it is a crime. Your friend should contact the police and report his ex for fraud. He should also contact Facebook and Hotmail customer services to have the accounts either closed with immediate effect or have them change the passwords. A crime incident number with help him greatly.

Yes. Its called harassment at best, it could also be considered fraud.

Several options.

How old are you? If teenagers tell your parent and get them to speak to the ex girlfriends.

Change all account information containing personal information so she cannot hack. Even if it's as simple as keeping the same question/answer but substitute random letters with numbers so she cannot work them out.

Call her on it. Tell her you know what she's doing and if it happens again you will contact the police. They will be able to pinpoint her.

Contact the support teams for websites you know she has hacked and ask for a list of IP addresses that have recently logged into your account.

Finally if none of the above work go to the police.
