How to start a conversation with a guy you like over facebook?

I've liked this guy since 8th grade (10th grade now) and HE JUST broke up with his girlfriend of 6 months. I see him in the halls at school but i want to talk to him over facebook right now so nothing is awkward. How should i start a conversation with him that is friendly on facebook, but not regretting anything i said because i DO see him in the hallway.
P.S. (I'm not trying to make a move on him just yet considering he just broke up with his girlfriend)

Here's a suggestion... talk to him in person!! then he can see you face to face, and then, like, you guys could, like, talk, and like, then you would, like, have a foundation for, like, a relationship at, like whatever level you, like want to have. Totally Awesome!!!

just talk to him like you would with your other mates.

if you have mutual friends try something like I'm trying to make a suprise party for ....... and I know you guys are friends too. So can you help me or would you like to come? if you don't have mutual friends than try something like I'm doing this charity work and i need some people from school and I randomly choose people would you be interested ? than if he says no say thanks ohh by the way I just realized who you are i see you in the hallway.. then continue talking first just find an excuse to talk
