What happens when you change your relationship status on Facebook from "in a relationship" to "single"?

Like if on Facebook it says in a relationship with so and so and you change it on Facebook, will the other person receive a notification?
Today I broke up with my boyfriend, and I can tell he's kind of in shock still. Is it too soon to set my relationship status to "single"? If so, then when should I?

he will NOT get a notification about it,

lets say you switch it from "in a relationship with ____" to single,
then you'll be set as 'single' and he'll be set as "in a relationship" but without the "with _____" until he switches his to "single"

and it all goes on silently

also delete that post that says you are now single to reduce drama
