Why cant I see my facebook notifications?

I just got a new HP laptop, and when I click on my facebook notifications, messages, or friend requests, it just highlights the symbol and does nothing. Is it possibly something with the security on my new laptop (Norton security)? Or is it a glitch? Any help would be appreciated!

Update your notification settings. Click Edit next to the notification types you want to receive and make sure the appropriate boxes are checked.
