How to find out if I am related to this person?
This may sound crazy, but, there is a famous person, and I think I may be related to him. Is there a website I can go to for free and find out if we are related at all?

No there is no website to go to free or other wise which tells you if you are related to a famous person.............. and yes to a genealogist who researches their ancestors whoever they may be it does sound crazy..............

If you wish to find out you need to research both your ancestry and this 'famous persons' ancestry this is how you start with yours http://familytimeline.webs.com/recordsinyourownhome.htm and you will have to hope this 'famous person' has advertised some of their ancestry or you will not be able to do it.........................

kelly.. it is possible you may be right, so you need to find out your family tree and it starts with your entire family and asking each one their relation and their parents and so on, when you get to the deceased ones it then costs money. nothing is free.

If that person has a Fan Club - it will be easy to send a letter to F.P. giving details of your family and asking if there are any links which you believe there may be.

There is no web site like you describe. The only way is to do the research on your family tracing and documenting one generation at a time and then comparing it to this "Famous Person".
I was not surprised at the connection I have to so many political families, use was really surprised to lean that I am also related to some well know Actors. I was not looking for a connection and just sorta stumbled on it while researching my family.

The seven basic facts we genealogists use to identify people (by "identify" I mean tell which man named William Miller is which) are birth date and place, marriage date and place, death date and place, and spouse's name - which will be maiden name for women. Banks use birth date and place for security questions. They also use mother's or grandmother's maiden name. So, to prevent identity theft, we genealogists don't put details of living people on the Internet. Some of us crafty ones tell Facebook we were born April 1, too, and change our birth year every year so that we are forever 39, just like Jack Benny.

So, if a site like you wanted existed - where you enter your name and it shows you your family tree - it would be a disaster for normal people and a treasure trove for identity thieves. If it also had famous people, their cousins would lose lawn ornaments to fans on a regular basis.

Since it would have to have birth and marriage dates, it would show who was having sex before marriage, too, which some people don't want to broadcast. (If someone is married in June and has a child that November, chances are they were having sex in February.)

The biggest obstacle to the site of your dreams is the time it takes to do genealogical research. My standard estimate, for white people whose ancestors have been in the USA for a long time, is 100 - 300 hours to get back to 1850 on 75% of the lines. (only 1870 for black people, sadly.)

A simplistic way to explain being related to someone is if you share an grandfather (ancestor). So.. to know if you are related, what you have to have is both YOUR ancestors and HIS ancestors. In general, genealogy sites avoid posting personal info about a live person. I can (by choice) post that my ancestor is Edw. Wade, at the same time that I am not providing personal data about ME like my name/parents, so forth. Many celebrities avoid this a lot, to avoid being stalked or harrassed. You are entitled to know your ancestors, but not "entitled" to his..UNLESS it has been posted by someone's choice. I have seen family info for some persons on wikipedia, not that I agree with it.
Another "connection" could be that a distant cousin married this person. That does not involve your direct ancestor or his, but is a type of relationship. That includes much more extensive data/ research, beyond direct ancestors.
The short version is that LIVING persons information/ ancestry is generally not online, and should not be. You MIGHT find it..but not just the easy way by putting your name into some search box.
edit
actually, I HAVE located such info, because a famous person's ancestry did wind up online.. Alanis Morrissette does in fact SHARE an ancestor with my daughter's. I suspected it by the name, but until someone identified her line, I had no way to be sure.
