Is it inappropriate/bad to ask someone what religion they are?
There's this relative that I have but barely know and we were talking about Facebook about how going to a place of worship doesn't make you any more religious than being in a garage makes you a car, and so I said "Oh. Btw wat religion r u?" and she responds "Nothing that I'm gonna talk about on FB!" Clearly she doesn't wanna talk about it, but was it inappropriate of me to ask or is she just sensitive? Should I apologize? All I replied with was "Oh".

Since you were already on the topic, I hardly consider it inappropriate...

I think just drop it...

I don't think it's inappropriate. It's not like anyone's going to kill you for telling someone else your religion. I guess she's sensitive or has bad experiences with the question before, like someone might have condemned her for her beliefs or something so just accept it and drop the subject.

I agree with Lady, because I really don't see a reason to get sensitive about it unless she was somehow put in an uncomfortable situation before. I know that sometimes I feel a bit defensive when others come knocking on my door to ask me questions....but I am still polite about it and open to talking...

I agree with the other posters here. It wasn't inappropriate at all. Dinner party etiquette dictates that it is inappropriate to talk about politics and religion because these topics tend to spark heated debates. In your case, you were already talking about it and it's just natural for you to be curious and ask that question. You can just let it go or if you want, you can say something like, "I didn't mean to offend you. I'm sorry."

Considering the context of the discussion it was not inappropriate. Obviously she is uncomfortable revealing that information, the best way to answer that question is to say sorry if I offended you or move on. I see nothing wrong with your answer, but a general rule of conversation is not to ask what race someone is, what religion they are, or their political viewpoints, bringing up these topics is a surefire way to offend someone.

no, I don't think so. But I guess some people are just uncomfortable telling others what religion they are.
