How do you make notifications appear on iPod touch app icons?

Like when you receive and IM and in the right hand corner of the app icon there's a little red box containing a number of IMs you've received and on facebook when there's a little red box containing the number of notifications.
I know which apps it works on bit the thing is they aren't working. Is there a way to activate it or something??

The only apps that have this are mail, itunes, app store, Some IM apps, rolando and facebook and they are programmed to do this automaticaly and you can't make other app icons do this sorry
