How do people have so many followers on Twitter?

Celebrities have can have over 200,000 followers and not say anything. But mainly you follow someone and they follow back and the process goes on and on. For example Facebook. You add your friend and then your friends friend asks to be your friend and then his friend and so on....You can tell this by looking at their profile it will show that amount of followers that person is following and how many he/she is beng followed by. Normally the user follows more than people follow him/her. 8125 to 8010.
