how to send an invitation to follow on twitter?

I want to send a direct message to someone who is not yet following me. but twitter popped up with this message saying that I can't, i have to send in invitation to have them follow me first. how do I do this?

There are 2 main ways to accomplish this.

First, you can follow them and when they follow back you will be able to DM them. The problem with this approach is that they need to take action before you are able to communicate. Some (newer tweeps) don't understand the "follow" concept yet and as such you could be waiting quite awhile if not forever.

Second, you can send them an @ that you would like to follow them requesting that they follow you. Again they are the one's in the driver seat but people pay a lot more attention to their @'s than they do to their DM's

Perhaps a combo of the two above ideas is the best approace.

1. Follow your desired user (ie @BodyByChocolate
2. Send them an @ that you have followed them and would like to be followed so you can DM them.
3. Wait for them to respond with your desired request knowing that until they do the best you can do is @ them publicly.
