You can upload any photo as your avatar or you can use the one from Facebook or Twitter.

Yahoo is currently making changes. It is not clear what the final results will be. The photos displayed in the Yahoo Answers settings can be different from the photos displayed at the Yahoo Profile. The Yahoo Profile does not show the cartoon avatar.

STEP 1.
Your profile is currently not hidden.
In order for your avatar to appear you must make your Yahoo Profile visible. That is done here:
http://profile.yahoo.com/y/settings/privacy/
There is no reason to hide your profile. Nothing appears unless you enter it and turn a switch on. The name can be anything you want.

STEP 2.
If you want to use your Facebook or Twitter avatar be sure to link the sites in the Profile options.
http://profile.yahoo.com/y/settings/linked-accounts/

STEP 3.
To create a cartoon avatar first go to http://avatars.yahoo.com and create one.

STEP 4.
You have 2 choices of where to choose the photo to use.

A. Go to your Yahoo Answers settings at http://answers.yahoo.com/my-activity/edit/about and click on "Update photo or avatar"
or
B. Go to your Yahoo Profile at http://profile.yahoo.com and click on the current avatar.

Upload one or choose an existing one. The same avatar is used throughout Yahoo.
[The cartoon avatar from step 3 is not appearing as a choice in the Yahoo Profile. It may be a glitch so use the Yahoo Answers settings meanwhile.]

NOTE: Procedures on a portable device may be different. I can not help you with that.

Go back to the avatar screen, http://avatars.yahoo.com then click Preferences upper right, click Change Gender. If that don't work, click Delete an avatar. Click Save after your choices. Then go back and choose the gender you want.
Your profile on your activity page says you are a female. If you have your profile hidden then it won't show. Lots of others are having this same problem now. If you still can't get it to work right, give it some time and try again. Yahoo has been doing maintenance causing many issues for everyone.
