Sending a message through Twitter?

Is there anyway I can send a message to someone using Twitter? When I click on 'Direct Message', I get 'Send <blank drop-down box> a direct message' How can I fill the drop-down box?
I try to type in there but it won't let me.

Just type:

d nickname yourmessage

replace nickname with the nickname you want to send the message. Don't forget the 'd' at the beginning.

You can send a direct message only to users who are following you.

But to contact a user who is not following you, you can mention him in a tweet (@+username) and he will be able to see your message: http://support.twitter.com/groups/31-twi...d-mentions
