Thomas Ball killed him self, because he was years behind on his child support and headed for jail. Thomas Ball was a vietnam veteran, he may have seen the monks in vietnam burn themselves to death. Perhaps that is why he chose it as his form of protest.

But debtors prisons are not legal in the united states. You cannot be jailed if you fail to pay your home mortgage. If you owe visa a lot of money, you can declare bankruptcy, but you cannot be jailed.

How is it Men are harrassed and jailed for not paying child support ?

Here's another example of a de facto debtor's prison. Get sue for a debt, don't show up for the court date. They order a bench warrant and arrest you for contempt of court.

Keep up here! It's a part of the calculated programme by your own government to use any means possible to disempower men. One of those is to screw them for every cent - the assumption being tht, if you keep them poor enough, they won't have the energy (low calorie intake diet), the time or the money to oppose just such oppressive moves, including the forced removal of their ability to make a career (in many ways at the moment) - as they would have done historically.

This is one of the major reasons I keep harping on the inevitable Fifth (I think) Phase of Civil War and Human Rights - the dispute over whether or not ELECTED government has some form of Divine Right. If we keep pruning down those Divine Rights - one day we may approach an egalitarian society where all are treated with honour - and behave back in a similar fashion.

You can get jailed for alimony too! remember she must be kept in the manner she has become accustomed to even if it drives you into poverty.

You get jailed for not paying child support because it's contempt of court. Failing to pay your mortgage doesn't involve the court.

You know how you get out of paying child support? Use a condom. Seriously. It takes two to make a baby, and there's no reason that child should suffer because a parent can't be bothered to take responsibility for it.

You are correct, there are no debtors prisons in the United States. You can not be incarcerated for owing money. Owing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is an exception.

People who fail to pay child support go to jail for violating a court order, not for owing money.

Actually, they have begin arresting people for debts. There was a local news report on it two weeks ago. Florida has begun doing it on any debts owed the state.

As for child support. Why are there arrears? If there is a legitimate reason, such as unemployment, the obligor can still file for a reduction in them. Most Child Support obligors do not know there is free help from the state, by federal law, to obtain a modification. At the minimum, a motion should be filed to have any interest penalties set aside, which can double or triple the amount owed. Of the total media “reported” amount of child support owed, 83% if interest penalties and not unpaid child support. These links will teach what needs to be known about child support.

For 22 years, I have volunteered my time working with divorced/single fathers dealing in family law issues, such as child support, teaching them about what the states are not telling support obligors.
