How does Twitter exactly work?

just made a twitter. i know that twitter is about updating ur status. but whats is the @name and #name like i dont get it lol. please help thanks
also, how do i make it possible so people dont follow me?

When you use " #'s " in Twitter, it means that you are tagging a specific thing. It doesn't have to be a name.
When you're using " @ " you are tagging someone that also has a Twitter account.

use the @name when you are talking to a specific user (@theirusername). #name is a hashtag topic

I don't know either, it's just updating status' for all I know, pretty boring as far as I'm concerned, I've tried to do it a few times before but this is the first time I've lasted more then a few hours, kinda pointless as of now.
