This may vary amoung various class of people. Some join it for having a contact with remote people, some to make friends (matrimonials!), stay connected with relatives and friends, etc. Many also join for business purposes. Facebook makes a huge profit for people (they add ads in facebook page).
In your case, as we know, facebook is the biggest addiction in the world. This has affected your family. Once one joins it, he can't resist the temptation of it!!
