will banks cash payroll checks with a lien on the bank account?
I just found out today that a lien has been put on my and my husbands joint bank account for his back child support. Both of our payroll checks are drawn on this bank. Will the bank still cash the payroll checks as long as they are not put into the account. This is in South Carolina the back child support is in Illinois.

They can't because the check(s) have to be held against the money in the account to cash them. If the checks bounce, the bank will not be able to withdraw the money from the account with the lien on it.

As the paycheck is from a separate account from an employer, there should be no problem.

Why are there arrears? If there is a legitimate reason, such as unemployment, the obligor can still file for a reduction in them. Most Child Support obligors do not know there is free help from the state, by federal law, to obtain a modification. At the minimum, a motion should be filed to have any interest penalties set aside, which can double or triple the amount owed. Of the total media “reported” amount of child support owed, 83% if interest penalties and not unpaid child support. These links will teach what needs to be known about child support.

For 22 years, I have volunteered my time working with divorced/single fathers dealing in family law issues, such as child support, teaching them about what the states are not telling support obligors.

No. There is a lien in place. You may want to go to a check cashing place and cash your payroll check there. Or you may try to go to the bank your Employer banks at and cash your check.
