You should open one and show her all the privacy settings first. You can always deactivate your account, so see what your parents say to that. Also, tell her that people cannot just check out your information. They need to send a friends request and then YOU have the power to accept it or ignore it. You can also tell her that putting in information like your birth date, phone number, etc are not necessary for a facebook account.

If you are 13 years or older, then you can go on Facebook by yourself. However, you must be safe online, even if you meet the age requirement.

Tell you mother that you won't do anything dangerous online; otherwise, if you don't include that, then she thinks that you will do something hideous on Facebook.

Perhaps you should print screen some pictures of Facebook ..like the bits where you change privacy filters or something and print them out.

Get her at the right moment, when you are together and both not busy, speak to her about it in an adult way and tell her that this is a new way to socialise with your friends and that you can hide your Facebook from all but your friends and show no information but your name.

Perhaps even show her this message? Clearly you really want to use Facebook and I can understand why, as a 16 year old girl - it really is the thing you do to keep in touch with old friends.. and socialise with new friends you meet at school.

I think you should show her this your question and it will show that you promise to be very adult and be safe on the internet.

You could even find an article on the internet about the privacy measures you can take on Facebook?

Good luck.x
