What does the # symbol indicate?

I have noticed the use of this symbol a lot recently, especially on Twitter and Facebook. What does it symbolise.

It came from twitter and it's called a "hashtag" in the context you're using it in. Twitterers use it to indicate the general topic or genre their tweet is about. It's supposed to make it easier for people who are searching tweets by topic (for instance, if you're trying to see if a given topic is trending or not).
