It is used on Twitter to link tweets of the same subject together, and people have taken it to other social networking sites.

Hmm I've been trying to figure out the same thing.
The only thing I can think of is that you know twitter? Well on there you can create hastags (#) and when you search that your tweet will come up in that search. I guess people think it works the same way on Facebook? Or maybe their twitter updates to their Facebook as well? Ask the next person who does that ahaha

It's called a hashtag and it originated from twitter. Putting the '#' before a set of words turn it into a searchable link on Twitter. On Facebook, it does absolutely nothing, but people use it anyway.

Its from twitter. Its not meant to be used on fb but people do it anyways. On twitter, when you use a hashtag(#) in ANY word, it becomes a topic or a "trending topic".
It has nothing to do with facebook, but I see it all of the time also.
