I just don't understand how to use it and what it exactly means. Do people just make something up to write after a #? How do I go about using/tweeting with one?

Its' called a hashtag. Its used to help find other tweets about what you have in your hashtag. For example, If i put #dogs in a tweet, you could click on that and it would show other tweets with that same hashtag in it. If that makes sense.

Tweeting is Known as Micro blogging such that its like a SMS u are Sending to many ppl .. Some ppl use it to communicate , Show off their Ideas to the World , etc etc ......... Just say whats happening in 140 letters such that itz easier to read and understand .. like a News paper headline ...

and the Hashtag # means to a Trend such that All of ur Friends on twitter are Talking about something like a BBQ2day da new friend can search twitter for BBQ2day and Find all the ones involving the conversation .. And much popular trends go world wide .......... search yahoo for "whats trending " and u will find it interesting
