The number symbol (#) is a symbol used to mark a hashtag in twitter.
The use of a hashtag in facebook could mean one of two things: 1) they are using an app to post across multiple networks eg. Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo etc. 2) they cant tell the difference between facebook and twitter A good way to check is to count the number of characters in the status <140 could be 1 or 2 about 140 it was most likely optimised for twitter and is probably 1 >140 can't be posted to twitter and is almost definitely 2 |

On Twitter, it's called a hashtag when you put a pound sign in front of a one-word phrase.
