I have seen this symbol used in front a phrase such as #theraven. What does this mean?

It's called a hashtag and is used on Twitter. People started using it all over the internet after Twitter started it. It's used when talking about a topic, such as a movie, person, phrase or anything you want. Topics trend on Twitter and the top 10 are shown daily.
