How does twitter work?

Can someone please explain the whole twitter thing to me? My boyfriend tried explaining it, but I honestly don't get it still. First off, how does one get twitter onto their phone? Secondly, how do you add friends or whatever? Thirdly, what the hell is it!?!? lol XD

1- there's an app on twitter where u type in your phone number so u get the updates to your phone
2- go to the top and click on 'find people'
3- its just a thing where your friends, celebrities,etc. say what they're up to and u can talk back and forth to them. but to get they're updates, u have to 'follow' them.

Twitter is a fun social network where you follow people and few their updates.
You can follow celebrities, or friends, or anyone else for that matter.

"Following" means adding them as a friend.
When you go to someones twitter, there's a link that says "follow."
Clicking it means that you are now following them, or "added them as a friend."

Basically, all you do is you post what you are doing every so often.
When you are going to the mall, you can "tweet" about it.
When you are eating, you can "tweet" about it.
Whatever you want.

When you sign up, you can set up your phone so that you can send your updated via text message.
You send the text to "40404" and that will look like an update.

It seems difficult at first, but its really simple.
