To me, the draw if twitter is to feel part of something bigger than you and, in a way, to avoid feeling lonely. Why else would you tell someone where you were eating lunch or seeing a movie or having a meeting?

I don't know.

However, many people have met online.

A lady who was married to Rush Limbaugh for a while met him online.

How meaningful was that? I don't know and neither do you.

I see it more as a fan thing, like if you think someone is saying something smart or if you're idol is saying something you can follow them. i don't really see many people making friends from twitter, but it's possible if you follow the same people as the person you want to become friends with. then you could talk about how great whatever you're following is
