What's with the weird Twitter hashtags?

I keep seeing guys post stuff like #trailmix #granolabar #goldfish etc. Does anyone know what this means?
I know what a hashtag is! Theres just a bunch of guys doing weird hashtags like that involving food and they aren't saying anything else in the tweet.

On twitter it's a way to connect topics. For example any post tagged #twitterwhore can be viewed on the #twitterwhore page, no matter who said it. It's a creative way to construct a "conversation" about a specific topic.

Now it's spread to other media besides twitter because some people think it's cool.
