you know some say ignorance is bliss? basically you will be hurt and unhappy about whatever you find. if you trust him that maybe he did something you don't like but maybe if it was old or something that looks bad but is really innocent? best not to look. better to avoid a fight and give him the benefit of the doubt~

It means that "If you're looking for something you don't want to see, you'll always find it." As in, even if it's not their, you're mind will make it be there. (If you're looking to see if your guy's flirting with your best friend, your mind will make it seem like it.)

I think the expression is just supposed to mean that (for example) you're in a relationship and it seems to be a really perfect relationship, so you think to yourself "there must be SOMETHING wrong". So you dig and dig until you find something wrong with the relationship or the other person and you let it be bad enough to end the relationship. You decided perfect wasn't possible so you found a flaw and wrecked a good thing.
The phrase might also be like the phrase "Be careful what you wish for" because you might be looking for something because you think it's what you want and then it turns out that it isn't all it's cracked up to be.
About your boyfriend and looking through his phone and such that could be like you're trying to find him flirting with someone or something so you can get mad at him. Just remember all guys flirt and if you have a good boyfriend it wouldn't make sense to end it with him if you found something flirty while you were invading his privacy. Some things you're meant to see. Some you're not.
