I need help on twitter?

Im new to twitter so i need some help..haha..lol
so, when u write # and some words, like what does that mean ???
for example : #thingsthatbotherme

It's called a hashtag. People use them to promote whatever they tagged on the trending topic list.

The first answerer's right. But I can elaborate.

If multiple people sends the same hashtag in a short time, that message willl increase how high it trends against other hashtags.

You can see on the twitter page which tags are trending globally and by country.

Sometime people will do something silly with it just for the case of being silly, not for hoping it trends, like in your example of #thingsthatbotherme

But when something big goes down, like when Michael Jackson died last year, that was a large trending topic for quite some time.
