You can upload any photo as your avatar or you can use the one from Facebook or Twitter.

Yahoo is currently making changes. It is not clear what the final results will be. The photos displayed in the Yahoo Answers settings can be different from the photos displayed at the Yahoo Profile. The Yahoo Profile does not show the cartoon avatar.

STEP 1.
Your profile is currently HIDDEN.
In order for your avatar to appear you must make your Yahoo Profile visible. That is done here:

There is no reason to hide your profile. Nothing appears unless you enter it and turn a switch on. The name can be anything you want.

STEP 2.
If you want to use your Facebook or Twitter avatar be sure to link the sites in the Profile options.

STEP 3.
To create a cartoon avatar first go to http://avatars.yahoo.com and create one.

STEP 4.
You have 2 choices of where to choose the photo to use.

A. Go to your Yahoo Answers settings at http://answers.yahoo.com/my-activity/edit/about and click on "Update photo or avatar"
or
B. Go to your Yahoo Profile at http://profile.yahoo.com and click on the current avatar.

Upload one or choose an existing one. The same avatar is used throughout Yahoo.
[The cartoon avatar from step 3 is not appearing as a choice in the Yahoo Profile. It may be a glitch so use the Yahoo Answers settings meanwhile.]

NOTE: Procedures on a portable device may be different. I can not help you with that.

go to MY ACTIVITY - Edit My Preferences - Update Photo or Avatar- Add Avatar- (this should create a new tab) -then click Create Your Avatar Now.

You can upload a picture from google:

1. Go to google and get any picture you want. Right click the picture and clikc "Save picture as........."

2. Click the button on the lower left on your computer screen. Go to pictures. Find your picture.

3. Go to your profile and click Change picture, Click upload picture. Find your picture and click " Open". You know have the picture you have chosen!

Hannah you can not have a picture or avatar with a hidden profile.

Your Profile is Hidden to make your avatar visible go here http://pulse.yahoo.com/y/settings click Manage Privacy Settings.
Move the second tab so it says Your profile is currently visible.

2 ways to do it.
Go to My Activity, top center, click Edit my Preferences then click Update Picture or Avatar, all your images will be displayed. Click on a image or avatar a orange box will appear around it,
you can remove it or select it as your display avatar. You can also upload new images from here. After you select a display image click SUBMIT at the bottom of the next page.
