How to use twitter and hashtags.. Instagram? Help!?

So i've never really been real excited about social networking... I had a myspace, and didn't switch to facebook until everyone else did.. Now everyone is switching to twitter. How the HELL do you use it and what's the point?? What are Hashtags? I know they're the things with the # or whatever. I know you can tag people like that.

But if i'm using instagram, i will see people with hashtags all over their pictures. Do they show up on twitter if you use hashtags? Whats the point..
Sorry if i sound like a bumbling idiot i just hate all this crap and don't feel like figuring it out...

And i put this in the computers category and beauty because i know a lot of teenagers look around beauty.

It a legit question. The hashtags have no business Being on instagram, but people put them on to be cute. Those people are not advanced enough to know that hashtags are only on twitter.
