how do you mention something on twitter?

i know how to mention someone just not something like when people put something eg. justin bieber puts #SWAG or #pesst and it highlights in blue how do you do that do you just put # in front of the word? thank you

The # is a hashtag. They're used as a flag to make a topic easy to find especially if the keyword isn't in the tweet. Like "Selling my house. #realestate." If you click on #realestate, you'll see all the tweets about real estate... You can go to hashtag.org to find popular ones and what they're used for.

But you can use it any way you want. A lot of people use it as a joke - like a tweet that says "Spilled coffee on my keyboard #sloppy" If you click on #sloppy, you'll see all the other people who used it.
