Why do be put # before stuff of facebook or wherever?

Like on someones status I will see them say something then put the # symbol then say something else. It seems lame and I dont get it.
haha thats funny so many people I know do it. maybe they like it so much on twitter that they want to implement it on facebook even though there is no actual feature?

On Twitter, a #, or hash mark, goes before a hashtag, which is a keyword that you can click on to view other tweets containing that hashtag. Since Facebook doesn't use hashtags, it doesn't make any sense to use them on Facebook.

i guess for emphasis
