Your avatar can be a cartoon or a photo. You can also use your Facebook or Twitter avatar. For an animated gif you should make it your Twitter avatar first.

STEP 1.
In order for your avatar to appear you must make your Yahoo Profile visible. That is done here:

There is no reason to hide your profile. Nothing appears unless you enter it and turn a switch on. The name can be anything you want.

STEP 2.
If you want to use your Facebook or Twitter avatar be sure to link the sites in the Profile options.

STEP 3.
To create a cartoon avatar first go to http://avatars.yahoo.com and create one.

STEP 4.
Click on the default avatar in Y!A and select "edit my preferences".

Click on "update photo or avatar" and a small window will open.
You can select the cartoon, Facebook, or Twitter avatar or upload your own photo.
After clicking "use selected photo" be sure to click "submit".
The same photo will appear in the Yahoo Profile.

If you want a cartoon avatar first go to http://avatars.yahoo.com/ and create and save your avatar there.

If using a mobile Answers app switch to Desktop mode first. Then go to My Activity > Edit My Preferences http://answers.yahoo.com/my-activity/edit/about > Update photo or avatar. From here you can set your avatar or choose a photo from your computer to be on Answers.

An alternate method is from your Y! Profile page. Click on My Activity > View your Yahoo! profile > Edit (person & pencil icon). (http://profile.yahoo.com/y/edit/ ) Then click on your avatar where it says "change picture", click on the one you want and Save at the bottom of the page.

One thing though, you will have unhide your Y! Profile before you will be able to use an avatar other than the default exclamation point.

To unhide your Y! Profile click on My Activity > View Pulse > Settings (gear icon) > Privacy. http://profile.yahoo.com/y/settings/privacy/ Click the button left of "Your profile is currently hidden". This does not affect your privacy settings on Answers; it only allows the information you have written about yourself on Y! Profile and chosen to share to become public.

Sometimes there are delays from a few minutes to over a day before your avatar will change after you have set it.
