For instance if I put Peanut-Butter Jelly <<<< Ham Sandwich then it means I perfer Ham over PB&J. Think back to your mathematics class where the greater # has the > sign and the lesser # has the < sign to indicate it is lower in value than the other number. Whichever way the mouth of the carrot sign is facing means that I perfer that side over the other

That is the less than sign. Like in math 1<2, one is less than 2.
