Facebook doesn't give the option of closing the account completely but only gives the option of deactivating it.

Go to the account command to deactivate your account.

1) Login your Facebook Account

2) On the top right navigation (beside search box), choose "Account Setting" from the "Setting" drop down button.

3) In the "Setting" tab of My Account, you can find "Deactivate account", Click on "deactivate" link.

4) Select the reason, why you want to deactivate your account and submit.

I wish it will help you.

I actually have done this once.
To close your account permanentaly your going to need to contact Facebook by going in their comments or concerns column.
Once your there you need to tell them why you want to close the account and ask them to delete it permanently. They will caution you that once its gone, there is no coming back. Of course you can just start a new one. If they agree, they will tell you to delete all photos - wallposts - applications on your account.

If your really worried that your going to be tempted by the deactivation scheme, just delete all the private things on the account ( pictures, convos ) change the name, and give the password to a friend to change and make them promise to never tell you. There, your problem is solved. But of course whichever you choose, its your choice.
Good Luck!

I did it this way:

To permanently delete your account:

•Click on Help at the bottom of any Facebook page.
•Search for “delete account” in the search box underneath the Help Center heading.
•Click on the “I want to permanently delete my account” link and read the 2 paragraphs there.

•Click on the link at the end of the last paragraph, read what’s there and then click the “Submit” button.

[Edit- And even if you do all this, Facebook still holds everything for a 2-week period of time in case you change your mind.
If you decide you DON'T really want your account deleted, just sign in at any point during the 2-week waiting period & your account will still be there.]

This very point was covered by "Computeractive" Magazine (it's a UK computer magazine) in the issue of 19. March - 1. April 2009 (p43). This is what the magazine said:
(1) Got a Facebook account and want to get rid of it? For most people, the first step would be to click the Settings button on the Facebook menu bar and then click on the Deactivate link at the bottom of the settings list. However, this doesn't actually remove the account - instead, it puts it into cold storage, preserving all the settings and personal information in case anyone has a change of heart. Lots of people don't fancy the idea of having that info tucked away somewhere, just in case.
(2) To completely delete a Facebook account, use the browser's Back button to return to the main Facebook page and then click the Help link. When the page opens, type 'delete' into the search box at the top and then press Return. After a moment, Facebook will display a set of instructions that explain what to do and what happens to the account. Read these carefully and then proceed by clicking the 'here' link at the end of the paragraph.
(3) At the next screen, click the Submit button to continue and then at the next screen, type in the password associated with the account that's going to be deleted and then type in the required capture words. This is now the last chance to cancel. Still want to delete the Facebook account? Click the Okay button and after a moment the Permanently Delete Account dialogue box appears. Click Okay to finish up. Note that Facebook still retains the data for a further 14 days. Don't log on during that period and on day 15 the data gets zapped - forever.
That's what "Computeractive" Magazine said about deleting a Facebook account. I've never been on Facebook, so I haven't tried these instructions, but I have no reason to think that they won't work. "Computeractive" advice is very reliable. Best of luck.

That's easy. Just follow these step-by-step instructions.

1) Log on to your Facebook account.

2) On the top , near the right side (to the left of the search box), choose "Account Settings" from the "Settings" drop down button.

3) In the "Settings" tab of My Account, near the bottom, you can find "Deactivate account", Click on "deactivate" link.

4) Select the reason, why you want to deactivate your account, explain to Facebook further if you want.

Select "Opt out of receiving future emails from Facebook." if you don't want to recieve emails from Facebook after you deactivate your account. Even after you deactivate, your friends can still invite you to events, tag you in photos, or ask you to join groups. If you opt out, you will NOT receive these email invitations and notifications from your friends.

6) Submit by clicking on "Deactivate My Account".

I hope this helped.
Good Luck! Smile
