What does it mean if someone calls you a gypsy?
Is being called a gypsy a compliment or an insult?
On facebook my boyfriends friend from his hometown that I don't know said on a picture of both of me and boyfriend: how much have you paid this gypsy to take a photo with you? wth does that mean? I want to say a comment back but don't know how to respond to a weird comment like that. Hahaha thank you! Ads |

Gypsy's have a bad rep. People know them for being poor and stealing items. If you are called a gypsy then they are saying you look unkept and poor. His friend is asking how much money he gave you to take a picture. So he means that Gypsy's will do anything for money and that you don't look good together.

The above responses are correct, but be careful with your response; the person on the other end sounds like he may just be playing around, in a sarcastic way.

It depends. Over here 'Gypsy' has romantic connotations so some may take it as a compliment. It sound like he was being sarcastic maybe or he maybe meant you physically look like a Gypsy.
On the other hand I have a Bulgarian friend who would knock your teeth our for even suggesting the he or any other ethnic Bulgarian looks like a Gypsy. |
