If someone is in jail for not paying child support what agency do you pay the money to so they can come home?

Also how long is the wait between when you pay and when they can leave the jail? Do you pay the support collection unit and then take you reciept to the jail?

Even if you paid the past due amount in full to the State Attorney General, the failure to pay Child Support as directed by a court is a criminal matter.

I know of several people who are in prison just for this charge.

Why are there arrears? If there is a legitimate reason, such as unemployment, the obligor can still file for a reduction in them. Most Child Support obligors do not know there is free help from the state, by federal law, to obtain a modification. At the minimum, a motion should be filed to have any interest penalties set aside, which can double or triple the amount owed.
