What is the best thing to write to a somewhat distant friend who lost a grandpa?
You know, I don't want to look fake and respond the way I would if it was a really close friend , but I also want to show sympathy. What is something I could write in a sentence or two?

Agreed. Just say that you heard of her grandpa's passing and that you wanted to give your condolences. It doesn't have to be an elaborate and moving piece of prose. All your doing is letting this person know you are thinking of them in this delicate time.
