I don't understand hashtags. What are they for and when do you use them? What's the point?

They're for trending topics. They just make Twitter more fun and connect people with similar interests.
So if you make a status saying: "Watching #DancingWithTheStars while eating pizza."
"#DancingWithTheStars" will become a trending topic and other people who are watching it too can possibly communicate with you because you both are watching the same thing.
