What is wrong with my Facebook notifications?

When I go on facebook, it usually tells me the notifications with the red sign at the top left corner but during the time I'm online it almost never shows that red sign anymore even if I do get some comment or like or wall post, etc. If I click on the notification button, it shows some of the notifications but not all of them, so I don't want to seem like I'm ignoring any of my friends or anything like that lol. I want it to work properly again, any suggestions or tips?

Not really sure how to formally fix it. I would frequently refresh the page and check your Internet connection.

sometimes whever fb gets messed up for me i open a new window or sign out and the back in

Just link your facebook with your email account and check your notifications through yahoo..
