How to talk to this guy on facebook?

So I have a crush on one of my Facebook friends, but I'm not sure how to start a conversation with him. I don't want to be seen as some weirdo who randomly starts talking to people. Plus, he's friends with my brother and I don't want things to be awkward. So any advice or am I being stupid?

start with something like
"i heard that you ....."
and he'll start explaining and then you got a conversation going.

Try to go on facebook when at random times until you see him online.Then just say hi and start a conversation .Say something that makes you sound like you are just trying to make a normal conversation
