'A LOT' as in I meant to have it two parts initially, but now I've written the second part and combined it to make it one. The second part also changed everything about the first part.

Before you submit a manuscript you've gotta query them. If you explain what you've done in the query letter and they request the manuscript again, you're good.

If it's the kind of book that agent sells, then sure. Mention that you've reworked and rewritten it.
Not all agents are alike. If one sells westerns, then don't send him a paranormal! I would not, unless the first rejection was an R&R--a suggestion to revise and resubmit.
Worst-case scenario, they read a fair amount of it and will recognize it as a revision of work they've already rejected. That makes you look unprofessional, unable to take "no" for an answer. What I'd do in this situation is work on a query letter which explains that you're received a rejection on an earlier version which has now been reworked extensively, as well as tries to 'sell' it so they ask for pages. |

There are many literary agents out there. Just send it with a query letter to them. Don't bother to resend to the one who rejected it. Especially since it looks like you really didn't change the first part much. He had his reasons to reject it.

Find another agent. Unless they invited you to resubmit after retooling, don't waste postage.

Like someone else said, every agent is different. Some will not reconsider no matter what, and some will reconsider as long as the manuscript has been completely overhauled. Just be upfront and explain that you submitted it before and have since overhauled the manuscript so that it's different than before.
A reason why some agents don't reconsider is because the writer changes small things and then resubmit and those small changes weren't the reason the manuscript got rejected - so the major reasons the manuscript got rejected are still there. I'd do it. Just research the agent and read all their interviews, twitter feed, facebook, blog, if they have those things, and see if s/he mentions anything about resubmitting. If they say no resubmits then move on. There are plenty of agents in the sea. Good luck. |
