How do you work twitter?

I know I must be the only person in the world who doesn't know how to work twitter, well I know the basics but what I don't understand is for example of I wanted to write something on the only way is essex's wall do I have to put #onlywayisessex or @onlywayisessex because everyone seems to be doing different things! I don't understand!

On twitter if you type @onlywayissessex then you plan on mentioning them in your tweets. They will be able to see that on their walls. If you replace the @ with a # then you are making reference to a "trending topic". Just a way to either create or follow a certain topic through your tweets. Hope this helped a little.
