The "#" is a hashtag. If you add it to the front of a word in Twitter it will make it searchable. You can also look up related tweets using hashtags. I don't know if it works the same on Facebook though.

the # means that your tagging somthing or someone in a post. for example:
GRupp14: I cant wait to go to the #park later

then you can click on park and itl take you to other people who tagged park in a post. it comes in handy if your trying to find tweets from a long time ago that are tagged like that.
