Get a couple thousand dollars together, open an account at a discount broker like Scottrade, deposit your cash in there, log in to their website with your new account and place your bets.

Frankly if you're like most people you can just as easily throw your money away at a casino, and possibly get free drinks.

Scottrade's site will have basic help about how to throw away er invest your money there. Yahoo has a pretty good financial research section too.

Your question tells me that you have a lot more questions, you just don't know it yet.

I would hold off and opt to go spend some time reading library books on investing. Then you will be far better prepared for the opportunities and risks ahead,

Unless you have money to burn, you don't want to take the test until you've had the lessons

There is a lot of misinformation regarding trading and investing in the stock markets - so be very careful where you get your advice from.

Now to deal with your specific questions.

1. First of all, to buy and sell shares, you will need a broker (and a funded account with said broker).
2. Secondly, regarding the mechanics of deciding when to buy or sell, you would typically come to a decision based on the outcome of research or analysis. It is this research and/or analysis that gives you an 'edge' over other traders/investors. You need to be able to THINK for your self instead of following the crowd.

Trading in the stock market is not as complicated as people would have you believe. However, the fact that it is simple (i.e. not complicated) does not mean that it is easy. However, if you are determined to succeed, then you will succeed in trading - it is straightforward, but not easy.

I have recently (last week) started a series of posts/articles, directed at people who want to learn how to make their money work hard(er) for them, by utilizing the share markets. The first few posts will assume no prior knowledge of the markets (which seems to be your case). Subsequent posts will then build on the basic material. By the end of the posts, readers should be capable of designing their own trading and/or investment strategies.
