First if you plan on doing this, you need to decide if you'll be doing it under an assumed name or your legal given name. Using an assumed name requires a DBA or LLC and without can net you hefty legal consequences. An assumed name is anything that doesn't include your full legal name (i.e. Smith Marketing would an assumed name where as John Smith, Marketing Rep would be allowed). I would suggest anyway if you plan on making money by doing this on your own to at the very least get a DBA sole proprietorship and eventually incorporate yourself to avoid anyone being able to attack your personal assets in the case of a dispute. This will also help with filing for your EIN and any necessary tax prep.

After you've figured that out, it's all about networking. Consider building a website, creating a LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Del.ic.ious account, etc for your newly opened freelance business and get the word out there. Give old clients/companies your business card, post ads in your local newspaper, craigslist, etc. Consider using Facebook advertising and such and be ready to provide past examples or your work, plus new concepts and growth potential.

Those two things will be your biggest obstacles/checklists to complete, and once you do it can only improve from there. But that's only if you're willing to put the time and effort in to get your name out there and get the clients coming in.
