Why do random people follow me on Twitter?
Every time I follow someone I find interesting on Twitter I get like 5 of their followers to follow me. What is the point of that? Are they hoping that I will in turn follow them?

Yes they are. It is a social networking site. The point of social networking is to network as much with other people as is possible.

It's kind of a way to advertise themselves. They want you to check out their twitter page and follow them. They don't really care about you're updates, they just want more followers. That's one of the reasons I have my updates protected so they can't follow me.

Well, there are two possibilies:
1. They like what you say, are interested in you, and would like to hear more from you.
2. They just hope you will follow them back, in order to increase their followersbase.

Most probably it is nr2 :-)
