If I join an affiliate program how can I promote products and increase traffic?

Is it a good idea to promote the products through Craigslist and similar pages? What are other ways to promote the products without spamming.

Craigslist is a good place to promote products but you really have to know what you're doing to get great results. Craigslist has gotten wise over the years and they "ghost" ads that appear too much. Meaning if they find you've placed the same ad in a multitude of cities across the U.S. they'll just remove the ads all together.
