Can I really earn money through affiliate marketing?
There are many people on the Net who are dying to help us with earning huge cash doing affiliate marketing - all of them of course charge for their service. But I wonder if I can do it without resorting to them. Something like building up a WP site of my own, setting up one or more affiliate products, and then promoting them.

Question is - will the venture be worth the efforts (seems it'll take lots of efforts)?

Earning Money as an affiliate is not a overnight business, you have to work hard just like any other work or business, the only difference is that you are your own boss. And yes there are lot of peoples who are doing this hard work, but only those are getting success who are doing smart work along with hard work, so remember no gain without pain and yes as a beginner, you may start up with a blog so you can learn basics of site and then move on to its marketing with different options. Affiliate marketing is also somewhat like other business we do in our day to day life for eg. selling insurance policies, where we have to make relation with the customer and to took him to confidence that yes this is the right product for you. Else you learn as you move further.

I'm not sure what type of affiliate field you're leaning towards, but i'm actually in the poker and sports betting affiliate market. http://bestbonuspokersites.com

If this is what you are looking for, my advice to you is to study various aspects of computer science like programming languages, web design, and search engine optimization. If you can build and market your own site to the point you reach first page ranking for the majority of keyword searches, it will boost your traffic which means more conversions and more income for yourself. If you are not interested in building your own site, you can find a web developer or designer to build one for you for roughly around $300. Once you have a website designed, you'll likely be eligible for an amazon.com affiliate account to which you can use to add a store to your site like the one you see at http://bestbonuspokersites.com Then once, built you can either go the expensive route of paying for links and marketing or try to market your website yourself using Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Few free marketing suggestions

search for free classifieds online to post your products in
post in article databases with intext html links back to your website
post your site on various social networking sites like facebook and twitter
tell all your friends and family and ask them to spread the news.

This is all stuff that you can do for free, free domain name, hosting, building if you learn webdesign, and marketing so anything you do make will be pure profit. Be careful when people approach you with offers because it could be a possible scam. Always do your homework and check everything yourself for credibility.

poker affiliating is a good market and free to join.

If you want to see an example of a poker affiliate site or just want to sign up for an online poker room, check me out at
